Arby Neppel

Arby Neppel, age 91, of Carroll, Iowa, died Sunday, September 20, 2009, at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Friday, September 25, 2009, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lectors will be granddaughters, Jennifer Peebler, Stephanie Tague, and Kimberly Lally. Gift Bearers will be granddaughters, Elanna Neppel and Mackenzie Needham and great grandson, Alex Jungers. Eucharistic Ministers will be Dan Lally, Katie Lally, and Arlene Dalhoff. Honorary Pallbearers will be granddaughters, Christine Finnegan, Kelly Jungers, Carla Nichols, Karen Koster, and Jessica Needham. Casket Bearers will be grandsons, Jeffery Needham, Joshua Little, Robert Lally, James Lally, Timothy Neppel, Christopher Neppel, Jonathan Neppel, Theodore Lange III, Taylor Lange, Isaac Neppel, and Joel Neppel. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Thursday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Thursday by the Carroll Knights of Columbus. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Thursday by St. Lawrence Parish. Mr. Neppel was born on January 22, 1918, at Willey, Iowa, the son of Maximillian and Rose (Werner) Neppel. He spent his younger years in the Willey community and attended country school and St. Mary School. On June 20, 1950, he was married to Helen M. Lutwitze at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton with Father Otto Dentlinger officiating. The couple farmed in the Carroll, Lidderdale, and Roselle communities until 1978 when they moved to Carroll. In addition to farming Mr. Neppel was employed as a field man for the ASCS Office in Carroll and in later years by Farm Service of Roselle. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Carroll County Farm Bureau, Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, and volunteered at the same day surgery waiting room at St. Anthony Regional Hospital. Arby enjoyed his family, playing cards, and walking. Survivors include his children, Jim Neppel and his wife Joan of Vail, Ruth Ann Lally and her husband Dan of Vail, Joleen Little and her husband Ken of Rindge, New Hampshire, Rosalyn Needham of Omaha, Nebr., Teresa Lange and her husband Ted II of South Riding, Virginia, and Jerome Neppel and his wife Brenda of Ames; twenty-one grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; his brother, Matt Neppel of Carroll; sisters, Isabelle Feld of Carroll, Agnes Stoolman of Carroll, and Arlene Dalhoff of Carroll; and sisters-in-law, Jean Neppel of Iowa City, and Orsola Neppel of Jackson, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Neppel, in July 1996; his parents; and two brothers, Ralph and Melvin Neppel.
