Dale Bernholtz

Dale Bernholtz, 85 of Carroll, died late Tuesday evening, September 30, 2014 at his residence in Carroll surrounded by his family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 4, 2014 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Music will be by Kate Cuddy and the St. Lawrence Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be Shari Bernholtz. Gift Bearers will be: Matt Faux, Tia Bernholtz, Mary Bernholtz, and Jackson Brandenburg. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Ann Christiansen, Iola Hoogestraat, and Donna Bachman. Casket Bearers will be: Dan Bernholtz, Steve Bernholtz, Jeff Bernholtz, Cory Cook, Casey Cook, Matt Faux, Nolan Vallier, and Jacob Bernholtz. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion and the Iowa Patriot Guard. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4:30 p.m. Friday where there will be a rosary a 5 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 9 a.m. on Saturday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church for the Disabled American Veterans, Carroll American Legion, or St. Anthony Hospice. Dale Joseph was born on October 18, 1928 at Carroll, Iowa the son of John S. and Hulda (Winker) Bernholtz. He was baptized at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll and attended St. Lawrence Grade School through the 8th grade. Dale began working at Reicks Garage and also Allis Chalmers Machine. On December 27, 1949 he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Kennebeck at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willey with Fr. Drees officiating. In 1952, Dale was drafted in the United States Marine Corps. and served during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge. Dale owned and operated Bernholtz Bros. Locker with his brothers, Lyle and Merle, retiring in 1989. Dale kept busy as a driver for the Disabled American Veterans for ten years. He was also active with the Carroll American Legion where he served as past commander. Dale was also active in the Boy Scouts of America and received the Council Award of Merit. Over the years Dale enjoyed trips to Canada fishing with his sons and sons-in-law and spending time with his family at their cabin in Lake View. An avid baseball fan, Dale always enjoyed cheering for the Chicago Cubs. He also always enjoyed the Memorial Day Parade and watching television especially Wheel of Fortune. Dale had a deep devotion to his faith being a member of St. Lawrence Church in Carroll and would pray the rosary daily. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. Each year he would call his children and grandchildren on their birthday and would sing “Happy Birthday” to them over the telephone. Dale will be remembered by his family and friends as an honorable and respected man. Dale is survived by his wife Mary Bernholtz of Carroll; his children: Dan (Shari) Bernholtz of Sioux City, Deb (Randy) Heath of Des Moines, Vicki (Jeff) Jung of Sioux City, Jane (Cletus) Cook of Carroll, Joni (Greg) Vallier of Council Bluffs, Steve Bernholtz of Des Moines, Jill (Roger) Brandenburg of Omaha, NE, and Jeff (Carol) Bernholtz of Estherville; 15 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and one more expected soon; his sister: Rosemary (John) Wiederin of Sergeant Bluff; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Doris (Bill) Bruggeman of Lidderdale, Ruth Snyder of Carroll, Eugene “Bud” Kennebeck of Carroll, Loretta Bernholtz of Carroll, Marvin Snyder of Carroll, Larry (Della) Hinners of Manning, and Elva Bernholtz of Carroll; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives and many friends. Dale was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Cletus Cook Jr., his son-in-law, Terry Coleman; and his brothers: Lyle Bernholtz and Merle Bernholtz; and one brother in infancy, Vernon Bernholtz.
