Don E. Pottebaum

Don Pottebaum, 81 of Carroll and formerly of Lidderdale, died early Thursday morning, December 19, 2013 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 23, 2013 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lidderdale. The Celebrant will be Fr. Dale Reiff. Music will be by Deanna Daniel and the Holy Family Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be Tracy Molitor. Gift Bearers will be: Kelly Pottebaum and Sheila Brody. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Lou Pottebaum, Vernon Drees, and Joe Daniel. Casket Bearers will be: Damien Erps, Brent Halbur, Jon Neppel, Bill Rotert, Keith Pottebaum, Dean Riesberg and Matt Pottebaum. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3 p.m. on Sunday where there will be a Christian Wake Service at 5 p.m. by Holy Family Parish. Born on May 12, 1932 at Carroll, Iowa, Donald Edward was the son of John and Coletta (Timmerman) Pottebaum. Don attended Sts. Peter and Paul School and then worked as a hired man for area farmers until being drafted in the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge he returned to the Carroll area and was married to Elaine Rotert on August 12, 1959 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lidderdale. For most of his working career Don helped several area farmers with their farm operations and the last ten years prior to retirement he worked in the Maintenance Department at New Hope Village in Carroll. Don and Elaine spent nearly 30 years living in the Lidderdale Community; while living there Don was a member of the Lidderdale Fire Department, Holy Family Parish, and also served on the City Council. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, spending time with his family and took great pride in his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Don is survived by: his wife Elaine Pottebaum of Carroll; his children: Michael (Dana) Pottebaum of Ledyard, CT, Joan (Don) Halbur of Breda, and Donna Pottebaum (Glenn) Erps of Carroll; his grandchildren: Ryan Pottebaum, Katy Rogers, Kerry Halbur, Tracy Molitor, Lisa Neppel, Brent Halbur, Troy Halbur, Kelly Pottebaum, and Damien Erps; his great grandchildren: Kitara Pottebaum, Kalynn Rogers, and Carter Rogers; his siblings: Art (Lou) Pottebaum of Carroll, Ray (Agnes) Pottebaum of Anita, Bob (Rosie) Pottebaum of Halbur, and Mary Lou Rotert of Omaha; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Caroline Pottebaum of Mitchellville, Marlene (Leon) Rieberg of Florence, AZ, Rayoma Rotert of Carroll, Vernon (Shirley) Rotert of Marion, Yvonne (T.W.) Wright of Carroll, and Bonnie (Marty) Pottebaum of Carroll; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Rita Pottebaum; and two brothers: Vernon and Earl Pottebaum.
