Duane Gehling

Duane Gehling, 70 of Coon Rapids, died Thursday, June 4, 2026 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at Holy Spirit Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Patrick Behm. Music will be by Kathy Halbur. Lector for the Funeral Mass will be Mindie Simons. Gift Bearers will be Chloe Gehling, Olivia Squibb, and Addison Gehling. Casket Bearers will be Cody Gehling, Clint Gehling, Brandon Squibb, Joey Lappe, Clyde Wietl, Gary Brincks, Tom Simons and John Feld. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Dedham American Legion. A visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church on Wednesday morning where additional visitation will be from 9:30-10:15 a.m. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church for a later designation. Duane was born on February 18, 1956, in Carroll, Iowa, at St. Anthony Hospital to Leonard and Irma Gehling. He grew up in the Carroll area and attended Kuemper Catholic School, graduating from Kuemper Catholic High School in 1974. In August of 1983, Duane married Rose Kerkhoff, and together they had three children. Duane dedicated 33 years of his career to Feld Fire Equipment in Carroll, where he served as the Service/Warranty Manager for Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. He retired in 2022. For the past 26 years, he made his home in Coon Rapids. In his free time, Duane enjoyed attending gun shows and spending time at the range, something he appreciated as both a hobby and a way to relax. More than anything, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He never passed up an opportunity to stop and visit with someone. Duane is survived by his children: Katie (Brandon) Squibb of Glidden, Cody (Jade) Gehling of Dedham, and Clint (Lindsay) Gehling of Glidden; his grandchildren: Chloe, Olivia, Bentley, Meredith, Elsie, Addison, Weston, Tage, Henry, and Cass; and his sisters, Diane Beberniss of Lennox and Doreen (Mike) Lappe of Carroll. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Irma Gehling, and is lovingly remembered by many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
