Duane Schrad

Duane Schrad, age 80 of Maple River, Iowa, died early Friday morning, January 28, 2011 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, January 31, 2011 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Mt. Carmel. The Celebrant will be Fr. Joe Dillinger. Mass servers will be Emma and Alex Schmitz. Lector for the funeral mass will be Duane’s son-in-law, Kirk Ulveling. Gift Bearers will be Duane’s grandchildren: Lauren Ulveling, Logan Schrad, and Carter Schrad. Eucharistic Ministers will be Alan Lemker and Vince and Lenora Gross. Casket Bearers will be Duane’s grandsons: Zachary Schrad, Christopher Kramer, Ryan Kramer, and Joel Kramer, Duane’s niece, Judy Broich, and Duane’s friends: Marvin Huelsing, Lynn Wuebker, and Dan Hermsen. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery in Maple River with military honors conducted by the Breda American Legion. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 1:30 p.m., Sunday where there will be a rosary at 2 p.m., followed by a Christian Wake Service by the parish at 4 p.m. Born on May 4, 1930, at Carroll, Iowa, Duane George Schrad was the son of Joseph and Mamie (Bruening) Schrad. He spent his lifetime in the Maple River community and attended St. Francis School, later attending Carroll High School. Duane served in the United States Army from 1955 until his honorable discharge in 1957. On May 4, 1960 he was married to Germaine Gubbels at St. Francis Church in Maple River, Iowa. The couple lived in Carroll for a brief time before moving to their home near Maple River. For his entire lifetime Duane farmed in the Maple River area and farming was his passion. He enjoyed spending time with his friends at Little Gus’s in Maple River and spending time with his family. Duane was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, and a lifelong member of St. Francis Church in Maple River. He was a member of the Breda American Legion, Fred F. and Norman J. Bruning, Post # 607. Survivors include his wife Germaine Schrad of Maple River; his children: Carla Ulveling and her husband Kirk of Cedar Rapids, Linda Kramer and her husband Steven of Boone, Thomas Schrad of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, Mark Lynam and his wife Kathy of Brentwood, Tenn., and Lee Lynam and his wife Patricia of Carlsbad, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law: Mildred Broich of Carroll, Henrietta (Harry) Tusa of Jackson, Minn., Hyacinth Lappe of Atlantic, and Eunice (Tom) Sheperd of Spirit Lake. Duane was preceded in death by his parents.
