Joan Schapman

Joan Schapman, age 82 of Carroll, died Thursday, July 5, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M. Tuesday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Con-celebrant will be Father Timothy Johnson. The St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary will form an honor guard for the funeral mass. Lectors will be Joan’s son-in-law, James Van Dyke and grandson, Tony Van Dyke. Gift Bearers will be her nieces, Joleen Thielen, Jean Gibson, and Mary White. Music will be by pianist Marcy Anderson, soloist Jake Gute, violinist Becky Windschitl, and the St. Lawrence Choir. Communion Ministers will be Sherry Henrich and Jim Stork. Casket Bearers will be grandsons, Tony Van Dyke, R.J. Van Dyke, Thomas Van Dyke, and Paul Schapman, and nephews, John Bernholtz and Dave Schapman. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Monday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Monday followed by a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Monday by St. Lawrence Parish. Visitation will resume at 8:30 A.M. Tuesday at St. Lawrence Church until the time of the funeral mass. Joan was born on September 30, 1929, at Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of Anton and Kathryn (Hunstock) Maystadt. She spent her lifetime in the Carroll community and attended St. Joseph School and St. Lawrence School and graduated from Carroll High School with the class of 1949. Joan and Paul Schapman were united in marriage on September 26, 1950, at St. Joseph Church in Carroll. The couple made their home in Mt. Carmel until 1958 when they moved to Carroll. Joan was a devoted wife and mother and was also employed as a dietary aid at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home until her retirement in 1997. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, Parish Funeral Committee, and the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary. Joan enjoyed her family, attending all of her grandchildren’s activities, and was lovingly referred to as GiGi to her great granddaughter Emma. She also enjoyed reading, word puzzles, jig saw puzzles, playing bingo, and traveling. Joan is survived by her son, Alan Schapman of Carroll; her daughters, Susan Van Dyke and her husband James of Carroll and Kate Searl and her husband Dick of Carroll; her grandchildren, Tony Van Dyke of North Liberty, R.J. Van Dyke and his wife Tessa and their daughter Emma of Sully, Thomas Van Dyke of Carroll, Rachel Klipstein and her husband Adam of Portland, Oregon, and Paul A. Schapman of Denver, Colorado; by a step grandson, Kent Searl and his partner David Boisclair of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Schapman, in May 1998; a son, Michael Schapman, in December 2011; two sisters, Lillian Bernholtz and Dorothy Schleisman; and by two brothers, Robert Maystadt and Kenneth Maystadt, in infancy.
