Leona Dopheide

Leona Dopheide, 86 of Carroll, died peacefully Monday, February 11, 2013 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by her family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Con-Celebrant will be Fr. Dan Greving. Music will be by Marcy Anderson and the St. Lawrence Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be Leona’s granddaughter, Jill Dopheide. Gift Bearers will be Leona’s granddaughters: Melissa Dopheide, Lillian Dopheide, and Amy Buelt. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Leona’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casket Bearers will be Leona’s grandsons: Chad Dopheide, Justin Dopheide, Andy Hagerty, Gary Greving, Doug Greving, and Jared Lahr. Burial will be at Holy Angel’s Cemetery in Roselle following the funeral mass. The Carroll Catholic Daughters of Americas will form an honor guard for the funeral mass. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. by the Carroll Catholic Daughters of Americas and a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. by St. Lawrence Parish. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 9 a.m. on Thursday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass. A daughter of Theodore and Anna (Bekehermes) Tunning, Leona was born on May 19, 1926 at Dedham, Iowa. She spent her younger years in the Dedham area and attended St. Joseph’s School. On April 29, 1947 she was united in marriage to Edwin Dopheide at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dedham. The couple made their home south of Carroll off highway 71 where Leona was a devoted housewife, mother, and loved helping with the farm chores and gardening. She was a fantastic cook; her pies, bread and caramel rolls were very popular with family and friends. Those passing by their farm on highway 71 always admired her beautiful flower garden. In 2001 Leona and Edwin moved to their current home in Carroll. She enjoyed playing cards, flowers, and just sitting on their deck enjoying the warm sunshine. Leona dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always had their favorite food prepared when she knew they were coming for a visit. Leona was a member of the Carroll Catholic Daughters of Americas, St. Lawrence Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, and formerly a member of Holy Angel’s Parish in Roselle. Survivors include her husband Edwin Dopheide of Carroll; her children: Eugene Dopheide and special friend Elaine of Melbourne, Australia, Gerald (Mary) Dopheide of Carroll, Jim (Mary Lou) Dopheide of Carroll, Joan (Vern) Greving of Willey, Lois Dopheide of West Des Moines, Randy Dopheide and special friend Lori of Scranton, Patty (Larry) Lahr of Carroll, Daryl Dopheide of Carroll, and Linda Hagerty of Altoona; her daughter-in-law, Marilyn Dopheide of Roselle; 26 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Vernice “Sprig” (Evelyn) Sporrer of Templeton; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives. Leona was preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law, Barney and Johanna Dopheide; her son, Ronald Dopheide in 1976; her sisters: Alma Sporrer and Lavina (Paul) Willenborg and Leona and Dorothy Tunning in infancy; her brother, Norbert (Hilda) Tunning; and her sister-in-law, Rose (John) Rotert.
