Paul Mayer

Paul Mayer, age 87, of Carroll, Iowa, died early Tuesday morning, February 1, 2011 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 4, 2011 at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Con-Celebrants will be Fr. Timothy Boekelman and Paul’s nephew, Fr. Gary Snyder. Mass Servers will be great-grandchildren: Jacob Bruch, Ashley Sibenaller, and Jared Vollstedt. Lectors will be great-grandchildren: Kristen Vollstedt, T.J. Bruch, Alex Bruch, and Austin Sibenaller. Gift Bearers will be great-grandchildren: Chloe Venteicher, Collin Venteicher, Ava Venteicher, Grant Sibenaller, Logan Sibenaller, Emily Venteicher, Nic Venteicher, and Cailin Vollstedt. Eucharistic Ministers will be a grandson in-law, Steve Vollstedt and a niece, Judy Feld. Music will be by Barb McDermott and the Holy Spirit Choir, with John Wagner as soloist. Honorary Casket Bearer will be a great-grandson, Army Spc. Nathan Bruch. Casket Bearers will be grandchildren: Jill Bruch, Janell Vollstedt, Todd Venteicher, Jamie Venteicher, Wendy Sibenaller, Chris Venteicher, Pat Venteicher, Joey Pudenz, and Andy Pudenz. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery at Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3 p.m., Thursday where there will be a Christian Wake Service by the parish at 6:30 p.m. The casket will be taken to Holy Spirit Church at 8:30 a.m., Friday to lie in state until time of the Funeral Mass. Born on June 29, 1923 at Templeton, Iowa, Paul Mayer was the son of Frank and Teresa (Bluml) Mayer. He spent his younger years in the Templeton area and attended country schools. Paul was married to Theresa Starman on May 14, 1946 at St. John’s Church in Adair, Iowa. Following their marriage the couple farmed near Manning before moving to Carroll in 1956. Paul worked at Juergens Produce and Feed for many years as a feed grinder and also assisted with the lawn care business. In retirement Paul enjoyed attending daily Mass, doing lawn work, and watching the traffic drive by from his seat on the front porch. Throughout his lifetime Paul was in various Polka Bands and played numerous instruments including: the banjo, accordion, drums, tuba and the harmonica. Paul was a member of the Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll. Survivors include his two daughters: Betty Venteicher and her husband Gary of Carroll, and Joyce Pudenz and her husband Tom of Glidden; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Dorothy Halbur of Carroll, and Veronica Quandt of Carroll; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Louis (Eunice) Starman of Carroll, Milo Rees of Guthrie Center, Margaret Kasperbauer of Manning, Verna Mayer of Carroll, and Emma Mayer of Carroll, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Paul was preceded in death by his parents; wife Theresa in November 2009; sisters: Theresa Schaffer, Agnes Snyder, and Jean Hansohn; brothers: Frank, Ben, Joe, and Leo Mayer.
