Phyllis Determan

Phyllis Determan, age 91, of Breda, Iowa, died early Monday, May 11, 2009, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Friday, May 15, 2009, at St. Bernard Church in Breda. The Celebrant will be Father Joe Dillinger. Lectors will be Patrick O’Keeffe, Michael O’Keeffe, and David Boeckman. Gift Bearers will be granddaughters, Jill McCaulley, Sarah Kahm, Amy Branon, and Christin Boeckman. Mass Servers will be Brandon and Tucker Boeckman. Eucharistic Minister will be Madonna Boeckman. The Breda American Legion Auxiliary will form an honor guard at the church for the funeral mass. Casket Bearers will be grandsons, Jon Determan, Nick Determan, Dr. Samuel Determan, Patrick O’Keeffe, Michael O’Keeffe, James O’Keeffe, Jeff Boeckman, and David Boeckman. Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda after 3:30 P.M. Thursday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Thursday by St. Bernard Ladies Guild. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Thursday by St. Bernard Parish. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for the St. Anthony Regional Hospital Foundation. Mrs. Determan was born on August 15, 1917, at Lake City, Iowa, the daughter of Jay B. and Emma (Kelly) Copper. She grew up in the Lake City community and graduated from Lake City High School in 1936. On December 1, 1939, she was married to Melvin Determan at St. Mary Church in Lake City. The couple made their home in Breda where Mrs. Determan was a homemaker and worked at Determan Store. She was a member of St. Bernard Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, and Breda American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Determan enjoyed cooking, baking, baseball, and basketball. Survivors include her children, Gary Determan and his wife Janice of Sioux City, Jim Determan and his wife Jean of Omaha, Nebr., Mary O’Keeffe and her husband Dr. James of Queensbury, NY, and Jeanne Boeckman and her husband Larry “Fred” of Breda; her grandchildren, Jon Determan and his wife Liz, Jill McCaulley and her husband Phil, Nick Determan and his wife Tracy, Dr. Samuel Determan, Sarah Kahm and her husband James, Patrick O’Keeffe and his wife Maiken, Michael O’Keeffe, James O’Keeffe, Amy Branon and her husband Jay, Christin Boeckman, Jeff Boeckman, and David Boeckman; eight great grandchildren; and brothers-in-law, Glen “Stoney” Neumayer of Carroll, and Jerry Simonds of Byron, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Determan, in September 1972; a daughter, Mary Jo Determan, in infancy; her parents; sisters, Wanda Simonds and Beverly Hovey; and a sister-in-law, Ila Mae Neumayer.
