Rita Meyer

Rita Meyer, age 85, of Carroll, Iowa, died Friday, November 20, 2009, at her residence in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lectors will be grandchildren, Chelle O’Connell, Kelly Loew, and Chris Fisher. Gift Bearers will be granddaughters, Tracy Lambert, Kelsey Soukup, Karisa Meyer, and Lindsey Meyer, and great granddaughter, Haley Boell-Fielder. Mass Servers will be a grandson, Cass Weitl, and Kolby Vetter, and Taylor Pudenz. Soloist will be a granddaughter, McKenzie Weitl. Eucharistic Ministers will be granddaughters, Natasha Havercamp, Trisha Tigges, and Danielle Goetzinger. The St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary will form an honor guard at the church for the funeral mass. Casket Bearers will be grandsons, Dean Boell, Troy Kean, Chad Fisher, Nick Quandt, Dillon Weitl, Josh Meyer, Sam Goetzinger, and Taylor Soukup. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Tuesday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Tuesday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Tuesday by St. Lawrence Parish. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for St. Anthony Hospice or the Kuemper Catholic Schools Foundation. Mrs. Meyer was born on May 4, 1924, at Mt. Carmel, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mary (Pietig) Gross. She attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and graduated from St. Angela Academy in 1941. Following high school she worked as a bookkeeper until 1943 when she returned to the farm to help her parents. On August 27, 1946, she was married to Arnold “Pidge” Meyer at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church with Father Peter M. Sturm officiating. The couple lived in Breda until 1955 when they moved to Carroll. Rita did sewing and alterations for Kasperbauer Cleaners and from 1975 until 1983 managed the Gold Bond Redemption Center in Carroll. In later years she worked part time for the Carroll County State Bank. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, R.S.V.P., St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary, Carroll American Legion Auxiliary, and was a New Hope Village Store volunteer. Rita enjoyed her family, traveling, playing cards, Chicago Cubs baseball, and Iowa State University athletics. Survivors include her children, Linda Boell and her husband Myron of Panora, Jane Victor and her husband Bob of St. Louis, Missouri, Karin King of Union, Missouri, Barb Johnston of Waukee, Kris Quandt and her husband Daryl of Willey, Peggy Weitl and her husband Dan of Templeton, Doug Meyer and his wife Kelly of Dubuque, Lori Goetzinger and her husband Neil of Carroll, Beth Soukup and her husband Mark of Overland Park, Kansas, Dave Meyer and his wife Kristi of Panora, and Jim Meyer and his wife Becky of Columbus, Ohio; thirty-one grandchildren; thirty-seven great grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Zelda Gross of Carroll, and Lillian Raine of Carroll. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold “Pidge” Meyer, in June 1988; her parents; two granddaughters, Kimberly Boell and Brenda Lee Boell; a son-in-law, Dennis Johnston; brothers, Ray, Norbert, and Paul Gross; and sisters, Louise Kanne, Sister Mynette Gross F.S.P.A., Florence Schapman, and Mae Pudenz.
