Vernon Weber

Vernon Joseph Weber, 73, of Carroll passed away early Tuesday morning, February 4, 2020, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines after a short battle with prolymphocytic T-cell leukemia. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 2020 at St. John Paul II Parish – Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Shinoj Jose. Music will be by Jane Heithoff and the Holy Spirit Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be Renee Heuton. Gift Bearers will be his children: Shelley Haberl, Christy Montgomery, Ryan Weber and Alison Weber. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Penny Gilsdorf and Judy Mayer. Honorary Casket Bearers will be his grandchildren Nicole Mena, Amber Haberl, Danielle Haberl, Avery Weber, and Sam Weber. Casket Bearers will be: Nicholas Haberl, Victor Mena, Scott Hermsen, Dan Cain, Steve Wiederin, Eugene Weber, Keith Weber, and Mike Weber. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Breda American Legion. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4 p.m. on Friday where there will be a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church on Saturday morning where additional visitation will be held from 9-9:45 a.m. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for Vern’s family at www.sharpfuneral.com. Vern was born June 4, 1946 to Bernard and Margaret (Daniel) Weber in Carroll, Iowa. Vern attended St. Peter Paul Catholic School and graduated from Kuemper High School in 1964. After graduation, he was drafted to the Army and was a Vietnam veteran. Vern was employed by Pepsi Cola Bottling Company and later at the US Postal Service, retiring after 34 years of service. On June 15, 1968 Vern and Jean Ratigan were united in marriage at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. To this union were born 4 children. Vern was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and Chicago Cubs fan. Playing cards was one of his favorite past times. He tremendously enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s school events and sport’s competitions. He volunteered at same day surgery at St. Anthony’s hospital. Vern was a church usher and Eucharistic Minister. Vern was very active with the Breda Legion as he was a former Post Commander and County Commander. Vern is survived by his wife, Jean Weber of Carroll; 4 children: Shelley (John) Haberl of Halbur, Christy (John) Montgomery of Fenton, Ryan (Laura) Weber of Eldridge, and Alison Weber of Carroll; 6 grandchildren: Nicole (Victor) Mena, Amber Haberl, Danielle Haberl, Nicholas Haberl, Avery Weber and Sam Weber; his siblings: Lou (Ellen) Weber of Maryland, Ed (Peggy) Weber of Missouri, Joleen Wiederin of Carroll, Jim (Linda) Weber of Carroll, Leo (Sandy) Weber of California, and Rose (Steve) Vonnahme of Altoona; his in laws: Connie Weber of Breda, Rita Hermsen of Council Bluffs, Karen Wiederin of Cedar Rapids, and Norma (Craig) MacQuaid of Missouri. Vern is preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Margaret Weber; his brother, Ronald Weber; parents in law, Edward and Irene Ratigan; his in laws; Kathy Gravitt, Elmer Wiederin, Bob Wiederin, Gene Hermsen and Judy Weber.
