Winona Grote

Winona “Nonie” Grote, age 85, of Carroll, died Friday afternoon, November 27, 2015 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, with her family at her side. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Brian Feller. Con-Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Mass Servers will be Josh Feltner, and Cole Feltner. Music will be by Kate Cuddy and the St. Lawrence Choir. Lectors will be John Grote, and Dawn Feltner. Gift Bearers will be Michele Pedersen, Lisa Larson, and Stacy Heuton. Eucharistic Ministers will be Jean and Leonard Grote. Casket Bearers will be Dean Feltner, Nick Anderson, Tim Neppel, Chris Neppel, Nathan Grote, Travis Hamilton, Steven Berger, Travis Heuton, and Benny Pedersen. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Dillavou Cemetery, rural Greene County. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4:30 p.m. on Monday where there will be a rosary prayed at 5 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, where visitation will resume until the time of the funeral mass. Born on April 18, 1930 at Scranton, Iowa, Winona Mae was the daughter of Clifford and Gladys (Taute) McCollum. She grew up in Greene County, and graduated from Bayard High School in 1948. After high school she attended A.I.B. College. On August 21, 1951 Winona was united in marriage to Vernon Grote at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda. The couple lived southwest of Breda where Nonie was a devoted homemaker. In 1953 the couple moved to the Carroll community. She also worked at Ocoma Foods in Carroll, and at General Electric in Carroll from there she later retired. Nonie enjoyed bowling, quilting, needlework, baking, cooking, canning, and while camping, shelling walnuts. She also enjoyed her card clubs, sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, and wintering with her husband Vernon in Arizona. Nonie enjoyed collecting Porcelain Dolls. Most of all Nonie enjoyed the time she spent with her family. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll. Winona is survived by her husband of 64 years Vernon of Carroll; her children: Louisa (Donnie) Feltner of Storm Lake, Robert (Marj) Grote of Carroll, Louis (Cindy) Grote of Carroll, Dale (Diane) Grote of Bloomington, IN, Jolene (Dale) Berger of Westside, Kathy (Maynard) Hull of Lake City, Allen Grote of Carroll (friend Michele Craven-Robertson), and Brenda (Lynn) Heuton of Carroll; a son-in-law: Jim Neppel of Dension; 26 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; her sisters and brothers-in-law: Anna McCollum of Mountain Home, AR, Elmer (Lois) Grote of Breda, Charla Grote of Farnhamville, Leonard (Jean) Grote of Breda, and Joe (Donna) Grote of Carroll; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives. Nonie was preceded in death by her parents; daughters: Sandra Fritz, and Joan Neppel; grandchildren: Jodi Grote, Mary Beth Feltner; a great-grandchild: Kyd Pedersen; her brothers: Francis McCollum, and Floyd McCollum, and a brother-in-law Erwin Grote.
